The plots below give an overview of substances for which experimental assessments of treatment effect are available. In these studies, ANIMALS (HOSTS) WERE TREATED DIRECTLY with the substances listed, and the efficacy of the substance in PREVENTING DISEASE was assessed by comparing test groups to a control (untreated or treated with a placebo substance). Studies are presented based on the type of outcome measured to assess treatment effect. All studies reporting mortality in the control and treated groups are also summarized.
It is important to consider the ROUTE of application of these substances. Routes for each study are listed in a TABLE following the plots. Filter or sort by route.
Please note that experimental protocols differed greatly: studies could have many different substance application methods, with different doses and frequencies. The box-plots give an overview of the range of efficacy reported, but direct comparisons can only be drawn by looking at the full details available on the data for each experiment.
The full datasets are available for download from the left panel, and tabled summaries are provided below.
Having a control group was one of the inclusion criteria for studies to be included in this literature review. However, not all studies compared results of treatment groups to control groups to report a calculated efficacy. We chose therefore to present all raw results available in each study, but please be mindful of the control data presented as own summaries, and per study in the tables further below. The control groups can be found in the column “intervention”, and the table can be filtered to see results of individual, specific studies.
